Australian Registration without NCLEX-RN or OSCE!

On January 27, 2025, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) announced a new Registration Standard: General Registration for Internationally Qualified Registered Nurses (IQRNs), introducing two additional pathways for eligible IQRNs to obtain registration in Australia. This initiative aims to alleviate workforce pressures across Australia’s health, aged care, and primary care sectors by increasing the supply of safe, experienced, and qualified registered nurses.

Key Highlights of the New Registration Standard:

  1. Additional Pathways: The standard offers two new pathways for IQRNs who have practiced for at least 1,800 hours in NMBA-approved comparable jurisdictions since 2017. These jurisdictions include the United Kingdom, Ireland, United States, Canada (British Columbia and Ontario), Singapore, and Spain.
  2. Streamlined Process: Eligible IQRNs can now complete the registration process in 1-6 months, a significant reduction from the previous 9-12 months. This acceleration is expected to save applicants considerable time and reduce associated costs.
  3. Removal of Examination Requirements: The new pathways eliminate the need for NMBA examinations or qualification upgrades for eligible practitioners, providing greater flexibility and aligning with recommendations from the Independent Review of Australia’s Regulatory Settings Relating to Overseas Health Practitioners.

Adjunct Professor Veronica Casey AM, NMBA Chair, emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “Facilitating the registration of suitably qualified nurses into Australia is a priority for the NMBA. This registration standard has the potential to reduce workforce pressures on health services across Australia through the supply of suitably qualified, safe and competent registered nurses.”

Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify for the streamlined pathways, IQRNs must:

  1. Have practiced as a registered nurse for at least 1,800 hours in an NMBA-approved comparable jurisdiction since 2017.
  2. Have practiced as a registered nurse for at least 1,800 hours in an NMBA-approved comparable jurisdiction since 2017.
  3. Have practiced as a registered nurse for at least 1,800 hours in an NMBA-approved comparable jurisdiction since 2017.

This reform is anticipated to address workforce shortages across metropolitan, rural, and remote areas in Australia by facilitating the integration of qualified international nurses. To ensure its effectiveness and safety, a review will be conducted one year after implementation to evaluate its impact and identify opportunities for further improvement.
